Key takeaway: 16.9% of software engineers replied to a recruiter's cold email, and 8.7% replied positively, according to a 2026 survey of 1,000 recruiters who each submitted one recent outreach email with its outcome. That is within a point of the 17.6% all-role average. The difference is how engineers reply: only 37.9% of engineer replies came on the first email, against 45.9% for all roles, and a four-message sequence lifted the engineer reply rate from 6.4% to 16.9%, a 2.6x gain. Engineering managers were the opposite case: 87.5% answered the first message and 62.5% replied within 24 hours.
"Engineers never reply" is the most repeated claim in technical recruiting, and it is half right. In our 2026 survey, 1,000 recruiters each shared one recent cold email to a candidate, sent between 1 June and 31 August 2026, with the candidate's title, seniority, delivery status, reply, reply sentiment, the sequence step they replied to and the days it took. 370 of those emails went to engineering candidates: 178 software engineers, 145 solutions engineers and 47 engineering managers.
Software engineers did reply, at a rate indistinguishable from salespeople. What set them apart was patience: most of their replies came to a follow-up, not the opener. Below are the numbers by title, seniority, sequence step and send day, with the all-role figures from the recruiter cold email response rate benchmark for comparison.
What percentage of software engineers reply to recruiters?
| Group (delivered emails) | Emails | Reply rate | Positive reply rate | Negative share of replies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer | 172 | 16.9% | 8.7% | 20.7% |
| Solutions Engineer | 142 | 16.9% | 11.3% | 16.7% |
| Engineering Manager | 44 | 18.2% | 11.4% | 12.5% |
| All engineering roles | 358 | 17.0% | 10.1% | 18.0% |
| All non-engineering roles | 617 | 18.0% | 9.9% | 19.8% |
| Sales (for comparison) | 217 | 16.1% | 9.2% | 11.4% |
Engineering candidates as a whole replied at 17.0%, non-engineering at 18.0%. Among engineers who replied, 59% were positive, 23% neutral and 18% negative, the same shape as every other function. Engineering emails bounced slightly more often (3.2% versus 2.1%), with engineering managers the highest of any title group at 6.4%.
Which engineering titles reply most?
| Title | Emails | Reply rate | Positive reply rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior Full-Stack Engineer | 16 | 43.8% | 25.0% |
| Staff Software Engineer | 17 | 17.6% | 11.8% |
| Software Engineer | 24 | 16.7% | 12.5% |
| Backend Engineer | 25 | 16.0% | 4.0% |
| Frontend Engineer | 22 | 13.6% | 4.5% |
| Senior Backend Engineer | 15 | 13.3% | 6.7% |
| Senior Software Engineer | 24 | 12.5% | 0.0% |
| Full-Stack Engineer | 29 | 10.3% | 10.3% |
Title samples are small (15 to 29 emails each), so treat the ordering as directional. Two patterns are still worth noting. Backend and frontend engineers replied at a normal rate but rarely positively (4-5%), and senior software engineers produced no positive replies at all in the survey. Full-stack engineers were the only group whose every reply was positive.
Do senior engineers reply less than mid-level engineers?
They reply more, but with less enthusiasm.
| Software engineer seniority | Emails | Reply rate | Positive reply rate | Negative share of replies | Median days to reply |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Individual contributor | 100 | 14.0% | 8.0% | 14.3% | 2.3 |
| Senior individual contributor | 72 | 20.8% | 9.7% | 26.7% | 5.8 |
Senior software engineers replied to one email in five, versus one in seven for mid-level engineers, but 27% of their replies were a decline and their median reply took 5.8 days instead of 2.3. Senior engineers read the email, think about it, and often say no. Across all engineering roles, Director-level and above replied at 33.3% with a 25.0% positive rate, double the 15.9% / 9.0% of engineering ICs and managers, though that leadership group is only 24 emails. The pattern across every function is in candidate reply rates by seniority.
How many follow-ups do software engineers need?
This is where engineers differ from everyone else.
| Sequence step | Software engineers: share of replies | Software engineers: cumulative reply rate | All roles: share of replies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial email | 37.9% | 6.4% | 45.9% |
| Follow-up 1 | 24.1% | 10.5% | 21.5% |
| Follow-up 2 | 24.1% | 14.5% | 14.5% |
| Follow-up 3 | 13.8% | 16.9% | 18.0% |
A single email to a software engineer converted 6.4% in the survey. The second and third messages each added as much again, and the full four-step sequence reached 16.9%: 2.6 times the single-email rate, against 2.2x for all roles. 62.1% of software engineer replies came from a follow-up.
Engineering managers were the mirror image. 87.5% of their replies came on the initial email and only 12.5% on follow-ups, so a manager who has not replied after the first message is less likely to be caught later. If you send one sequence to both groups, the follow-ups are doing their work on the engineers. Cadence guidance is in our recruiting follow-up benchmarks.
How fast do engineers reply?
| Group | Replied within 24 hours | Replied within 7 days | Median days to reply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer | 34.5% | 72.4% | 2.3 |
| Solutions Engineer | 45.8% | 87.5% | 2.4 |
| Engineering Manager | 62.5% | 100% | 0.65 |
| All engineering roles | 42.6% | 82.0% | 2.0 |
| All roles | 39.0% | 79.1% | 2.1 |
Engineering managers were the fastest repliers of any title group in the survey: a median of about 16 hours, with five of eight replies inside a day. Software engineers were slower than average, and 27.6% of their replies arrived after a week, which is the follow-up effect again. More on timing in candidate response time to recruiter emails.
What day should you email engineers?
| Send day (engineering roles) | Emails | Reply rate | Positive reply rate | Negative share of replies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 59 | 18.6% | 11.9% | 27.3% |
| Tuesday | 77 | 20.8% | 14.3% | 6.2% |
| Wednesday | 68 | 14.7% | 11.8% | 10.0% |
| Thursday | 86 | 16.3% | 4.7% | 28.6% |
| Friday | 46 | 13.0% | 6.5% | 33.3% |
Tuesday was the best weekday for engineers on every measure, and Thursday, the day recruiters sent engineers the most email, had the lowest positive rate of the week. Full detail in the best day to email software engineers.
How to use these numbers
- Plan for 17% replies and 9% positive replies from a well-targeted engineering list. If you are seeing 6-7%, you are measuring the first email only.
- Never stop at one message for engineers. 62% of their replies came from follow-ups.
- Treat engineering managers differently. They answer fast and on the first email; spend the extra follow-ups on individual contributors.
- Send on Tuesday, not Thursday, and expect senior engineers to take a week and say no more often.
At Noon, the AI sourcer finds engineers across the web rather than only on LinkedIn, and the AI outreach agent runs the full email and SMS follow-up sequence for every candidate, which is where most engineer replies come from. Methodology
In 2026 we surveyed 1,000 recruiters. Each submitted one recent outbound cold email to a candidate, sent between 1 June and 31 August 2026, with: send date and weekday, candidate role family and title, seniority, delivery status, whether the candidate replied, reply sentiment (positive, neutral, negative, classified by the recruiter), the sequence step replied to (initial email or follow-up 1-3) and days to reply. Engineering roles are Software Engineer, Solutions Engineer and Engineering Manager (370 emails, 358 delivered). Rates use delivered emails. All figures come from seo/research/stats/recruiter-outreach-survey-2026/compute.py run against the survey dataset.
Limitations
Per-title samples are 15-29 emails and per-day engineering samples are 46-86, so title and day rankings are directional rather than precise. Engineering leadership (Director and above) is 24 emails. Sentiment was classified by the submitting recruiter. The window is one summer quarter.
FAQ
What is the average response rate for recruiting emails to software engineers? 16.9% replied and 8.7% replied positively in the 2026 survey, on 172 delivered emails to software engineers. All engineering roles combined: 17.0% and 10.1%.
Do software engineers respond to recruiters less than other candidates? No. Software engineers replied at 16.9%, sales candidates at 16.1%, and the all-role average was 17.6%. Engineers do reply later and more often to follow-ups.
How many follow-up emails should I send to a software engineer? Three. Each follow-up added replies in the survey, and the four-message sequence reached 16.9% against 6.4% for the first email alone.
Why do senior engineers reply more often but say no more often? Senior ICs replied at 20.8% versus 14.0% for mid-level engineers, but 26.7% of their replies were a decline and their median reply took 5.8 days. Many senior engineers answer out of courtesy after considering the role.
How quickly do engineering managers respond to recruiters? Fastest of any group surveyed: 62.5% within 24 hours and a median of about 16 hours. 87.5% replied to the first email.
