Key takeaway: Tuesday is the best day to email software engineers. In a 2026 survey of 1,000 recruiters, Tuesday emails to engineering candidates got a 20.8% reply rate and a 14.3% positive reply rate, and only 6.2% of those replies were a decline. Thursday, the day recruiters sent engineers the most email, produced the lowest positive rate of any weekday (4.7%) and a 28.6% rejection share. Across all roles the pattern held: Tuesday had the highest reply rate (19.3%) and the lowest rejection share (8.1%), Thursday the highest rejection share (32.3%), and Wednesday the fastest replies (55.6% within 24 hours).

Send-day advice for recruiters is usually borrowed from sales email studies. This page uses recruiting data. In 2026 we surveyed 1,000 recruiters, each of whom submitted one recent cold email to a candidate, sent between 1 June and 31 August 2026, with the weekday it was sent, the candidate's role and seniority, and whether, when and how the candidate replied.

370 of the emails went to engineering candidates (software engineers, solutions engineers and engineering managers), 358 of which were delivered. The engineering results are below, followed by the all-role table for comparison. Reply rates by role and seniority are on the recruiter cold email response rate page.

What is the best day to send recruiting emails to engineers?

Send day (engineering roles) Emails Share of engineer emails sent Reply rate Positive reply rate Negative share of replies Replied within 24 hours
Monday 59 16.0% 18.6% 11.9% 27.3% 54.5%
Tuesday 77 20.8% 20.8% 14.3% 6.2% 50.0%
Wednesday 68 18.4% 14.7% 11.8% 10.0% 70.0%
Thursday 86 23.2% 16.3% 4.7% 28.6% 35.7%
Friday 46 12.4% 13.0% 6.5% 33.3% 0.0%
Saturday 11 3.0% 9.1% 9.1% 0.0% 0.0%
Sunday 11 3.0% 27.3% 18.2% 0.0% 0.0%

Tuesday led on reply rate, positive rate and rejection share at once. One Tuesday email in seven produced an interested engineer, and only one Tuesday reply in sixteen was a no.

Thursday is the finding recruiters should act on. It was the single most common day to email an engineer in the survey (23.2% of engineering sends), and it returned the worst positive rate of the working week: 4.7%, a third of Tuesday's. More than a quarter of Thursday replies were a rejection. Friday was weaker still on volume (13.0% reply, 6.5% positive, 33.3% rejections) and no Friday reply arrived inside 24 hours. The Sunday figure (3 replies from 11 emails) is too small to act on.

Grouped: Monday to Wednesday emails to engineers replied at 18.1% with a 12.7% positive rate; Thursday and Friday emails replied at 15.2% with a 5.3% positive rate. Moving an engineering send from Thursday or Friday to Tuesday roughly doubled the chance of a positive reply in this survey.

Does the same pattern hold for all candidates?

Send day (all roles) Emails Reply rate Positive reply rate Negative share of replies Replied within 24 hours Median days to reply
Monday 188 17.0% 9.6% 21.9% 43.8% 1.9
Tuesday 192 19.3% 12.0% 8.1% 40.5% 2.5
Wednesday 192 18.8% 8.9% 19.4% 55.6% 0.9
Thursday 184 16.8% 8.2% 32.3% 35.5% 2.6
Friday 150 18.0% 12.0% 18.5% 14.8% 5.1
Saturday 32 12.5% 9.4% 25.0% 25.0% 2.9
Sunday 37 13.5% 8.1% 0.0% 40.0% 2.1

Across all 975 delivered emails, Tuesday again had the highest reply rate and the lowest rejection share, and Thursday again had the highest rejection share, four times Tuesday's. Tuesday and Wednesday together replied at 19.0% against 16.8% for the other five days, were answered within 24 hours 47.9% of the time against 32.3%, and drew a 13.7% rejection share against 23.2%.

Friday is the odd case. All-role Friday emails replied at a respectable 18.0% and a 12.0% positive rate, but slowly: 70% of Friday replies came to a follow-up and the median wait was 5.1 days. For engineers specifically, Friday did not recover.

Should recruiters email on weekends?

Weekend emails were 7% of the survey and replied at 13.0%, against 18.0% on weekdays, a 28% relative drop. Weekend engineering samples (11 emails each day) are too small to read on their own. The practical rule is to queue weekend sends for Tuesday, which also lines the first follow-up up with Thursday or the following Monday. Our wider best time to send recruiting outreach page covers time of day and seasonality.

Which day gets the fastest reply?

Wednesday. 55.6% of replies to Wednesday emails arrived within 24 hours and the median wait was under a day; for engineers, 70% of Wednesday replies came inside a day. Friday was slowest at 14.8% within 24 hours and a 5.1-day median. If a role needs a shortlist by the end of the week, Wednesday is the latest day to send the opener. The full timing breakdown is in candidate response time to recruiter emails.

Why would Thursday draw more rejections?

The survey records outcomes, not reasons, so this is interpretation. A Thursday email tends to be read Thursday evening or Friday, when a candidate is closing out the week and is more inclined to clear an inbox with a quick no than to start a conversation. A Tuesday email is read with the week ahead of it. Whatever the cause, the gap was consistent: Thursday had the highest rejection share for engineers (28.6%) and for all roles (32.3%), and the lowest positive rate of the working week for engineers.

  1. Opener on Tuesday. Best reply rate, best positive rate, fewest rejections.
  2. First follow-up on Thursday or Friday only as a follow-up, not an opener; follow-ups in the survey drew replies regardless of the day, and 62% of software engineer replies came from one (see the software engineer response rate breakdown).
  3. Second follow-up the next Tuesday or Wednesday, a week on, inside the window when 79% of replies arrive.
  4. Third follow-up around day 14 to 15. 18% of all replies in the survey answered the third follow-up, at a median of 15.9 days.

At Noon, the AI outreach agent schedules email and SMS sequences into these windows and keeps following up until the candidate answers, and the AI sourcer finds the engineers to send them to. For the copy itself, see our cold recruiting outreach templates.

Methodology

In 2026 we surveyed 1,000 recruiters. Each submitted one recent outbound cold email to a candidate, sent between 1 June and 31 August 2026, with: send date and weekday, candidate role family and title, seniority, delivery status, whether the candidate replied, reply sentiment (positive, neutral, negative, as classified by the recruiter), the sequence step replied to and days from the initial email to the reply. Engineering roles are Software Engineer, Solutions Engineer and Engineering Manager (370 emails, 358 delivered). The send day is the weekday of the initial email; follow-ups are not separately dated. Rates use delivered emails. Every figure is produced by seo/research/stats/recruiter-outreach-survey-2026/compute.py against the survey dataset.

Limitations

Engineering samples per weekday are 46 to 86 emails (6 to 16 replies), so the day ranking is directional; weekend engineering samples (11 emails) are not interpretable alone. Only the opener's send day is recorded, so a reply to a follow-up is attributed to the day the sequence started. The survey records days, not hours, so time of day is not measured. Sentiment was classified by the submitting recruiter. The window is one summer quarter.
