Key takeaway: $29.99 per check is the lowest price HireRight's group publishes, and it is not on hireright.com. It is the starting price on backgroundchecks.com, "a HireRight company" and its self-serve platform for small businesses, as read on 20 October 2026. HireRight's own pricing page shows no dollar figure, only "GET A CUSTOMIZED PRICING QUOTE." Buyer data from Vendr puts a standard HireRight package (basic checks plus criminal records) at an estimated $30 to $65 per screening.

HireRight is one of the largest employment screening companies. Its homepage claims "85M+ People Screened Annually," coverage of "200+ Countries & Territories" and "70+ ATS & HCM Integrations" (hireright.com, read 20 October 2026). Its annual report for fiscal 2023 says it served "approximately 37,000 customers," including "approximately 50% of the Fortune 100 as of 2023," and earned $721.9 million in revenue (Form 10-K, fiscal 2023).

That scale comes with contract pricing. The 10-K says "Business with our enterprise customers is generally established under multi-year contracts that define pricing and scope of services," while small customers are pointed to a separate self-serve site with "pre-defined pricing terms." So "how much does HireRight cost" has two answers: a published per-check price on the self-serve side and a negotiated price on the enterprise side.

Every figure below was read in a rendered browser on 20 October 2026 or taken from HireRight's SEC filings, and the arithmetic comes from a script committed with this article. Buyer-reported and review-site figures are labelled as estimates every time they appear. For how HireRight ranks against Sterling, Checkr and others on coverage and turnaround, see our background check services comparison.

How much does HireRight cost in 2026?

HireRight does not publish a price for its HireRight-branded service. Here is what each HireRight-owned page showed on the check date:

Page (read 20 Oct 2026) Price shown What it says
hireright.com/pricing None "GET A CUSTOMIZED PRICING QUOTE"; solutions "designed to meet your industry, regulatory, and budgetary requirements"
HireRight self-service page "starting at $24.99" Recommends "our small and medium business platform on backgroundchecks.com"
backgroundchecks.com "starts at $29.99 per check" "No contracts. No minimums." and "no setup fees"
backgroundchecks.com order page None Large business tier for "More than 100+ checks /per month" with "Custom Packages, Volume & Pricing"

The two self-serve figures disagree. HireRight's page still advertises "low prices starting at $24.99," but backgroundchecks.com's own homepage, the page where you actually order, says pricing "starts at $29.99 per check," $5.00 more. Budget from $29.99; the lower figure appears to be out of date.

Above roughly 100 checks a month, backgroundchecks.com switches to invoice billing and custom pricing, and HireRight's main site routes everyone to a sales quote. No published price exists for that tier, and none is estimated here as a HireRight price.

What do buyers report paying for HireRight?

Buyer-data and review sites fill the gap, and they do not agree. Every figure in this table is a third-party estimate, not a HireRight price:

Source (read 20 Oct 2026) Estimate Basis
Vendr Basic $15 to $35, standard $30 to $65, comprehensive $60 to $150+ per screening "anonymized HireRight transactions in Vendr's database"
Vendr International checks add $50 to $300+ per country Same dataset
AccuSourceHR Basic around $40, mid-tier $70 to $80 per check; enterprise contracts "begin at around $17,000 annually" Review article by a competing screening firm
Turing Verify "USD 40 to 80+" per check Vendor comparison guide
SpendHound Average $10,110 a year (SMB), $176,319 a year (enterprise) "spend data from actual HireRight customers"
Capterra No starting price ("Get Price") Listing only

The per-check estimates cluster between $30 and $80 for a package that includes a criminal search. SpendHound's enterprise average is 17.4 times its SMB average, which says more about volume than about price per check: annual spend is mostly a function of how many people you screen.

How does volume change the HireRight price?

Volume is the main lever in every source. Vendr reports standard-package rates by annual screening volume (estimates):

Annual screenings Standard package, per screening (Vendr estimate) Midpoint
Under 100 $50 to $80 $65
100 to 1,000 $35 to $55 $45
1,000+ $25 to $45 $35

On Vendr's own arithmetic, 1,000 standard screenings a year costs an estimated $30,000 to $65,000 before negotiation. HireRight's 10-K adds a caveat buyers should notice: although customers "typically enter into multi-year contracts," they "are not required to purchase any minimum amounts of services." Volume tiers are a pricing tool, not a guaranteed commitment.

What fees does HireRight add on top of the package?

The biggest add-on is not a HireRight fee at all. Court, state and database charges are billed through. HireRight's 10-K calls this "surcharge revenue," defined as "fees charged to customers for the Company's acquisition of data from federal, state and local jurisdictions and certain services from commercial data providers."

HireRight revenue, fiscal 2023 (10-K) Amount Share
Service revenue $516.0 million 71.5%
Surcharge revenue (pass-through data fees) $205.9 million 28.5%
Total $721.9 million 100%

That 28.5% is the clearest public signal of how much third-party fees add to a HireRight bill: more than a quarter of everything customers paid in 2023. Revenue fell 10.5% from 2022's $806.7 million.

Vendr lists other cost lines to clarify in a quote (estimates): one-time setup fees for API and ATS integrations of "$1,000 to $10,000+," rush processing that typically adds 30% to 50%, and automatic annual price escalations of typically 3% to 5%. The 10-K confirms the escalator mechanism exists: "Some of our customer agreements fix the prices we may charge for some period of time and/or limit permissible price increases."

What does HireRight earn per person screened?

The 10-K gives enough to compute a blended figure. In 2023 HireRight "screened approximately 26 million job applicants, employees and contractors" and "processed over 95 million screens."

  • Revenue per person screened: $27.76 ($721.9 million divided by 26 million people), of which $7.92 was surcharges.
  • Revenue per individual screen: at most $7.60, because each person averaged about 3.65 separate searches.

This is our arithmetic on HireRight's reported totals, not a price. The blend includes very large employers on negotiated rates, drug tests, ongoing monitoring and cheap single searches, so a small employer's quote will sit well above it. It is still useful as a floor: an enterprise quote far above $28 per person for a basic package deserves a second look.

Is HireRight more expensive than Checkr or GoodHire?

At self-serve list prices, no. backgroundchecks.com's $29.99 starting price matches the entry tier at both competitors that publish prices:

Package (read 20 Oct 2026) HireRight group Checkr GoodHire
Entry check From $29.99 (backgroundchecks.com) Basic $29.99 Basic $29.99
Mid tier Not published Essential $59.99 Essential $59.99
Top published tier Not published Complete $94.99 Complete $94.99
Enterprise Quote ("GET A CUSTOMIZED PRICING QUOTE") "Contact sales for pricing" Custom quote ("GET A CUSTOM QUOTE")

Checkr and GoodHire publish every self-serve tier (Checkr pricing, GoodHire pricing). HireRight publishes only a starting price, so comparing a county criminal search or a federal search means getting a quote. For the full fee schedules on the other side, see our Checkr pricing breakdown and GoodHire pricing breakdown.

Where HireRight's pitch differs is scope, not list price: "200+ Countries & Territories" and enterprise integrations. If most of your hires are in the US and you run fewer than about 100 checks a month, the published Checkr and GoodHire tiers make costs easier to predict.

Where does Noon fit next to a background check?

A background check happens once per finalist, at the end of hiring. The bigger cost in most hiring budgets comes earlier, in finding and contacting candidates. In Noon evaluation calls, one of the most common pricing criteria buyers raise is a preference for unlimited usage over credit-based models.

Noon is not a background check provider. The Noon platform handles the stages before the offer: it sources candidates across the web, evaluates them against your criteria, runs email and SMS outreach and books interviews. If applicant fraud is the reason you screen, see our fake job applicant statistics.

Noon's pricing is a single plan with unlimited sourcing, unlimited email enrichment, unlimited contacts, unlimited agents and unlimited seats, with no per-candidate meter. To see which recruiting vendors publish a price at all, use our recruiting software pricing index; for a total budget view, see the cost per hire benchmarks.

Sources and methodology

HireRight's pricing, self-service, homepage, partners and criminal background pages, backgroundchecks.com's homepage and order page, and the Checkr and GoodHire pricing pages were read rendered in a browser session on 20 October 2026 (UTC). The Vendr, SpendHound, AccuSourceHR, Turing Verify and Capterra pages were read the same way and are used only as labelled estimates. HireRight's Form 10-K for fiscal 2023 (filed 12 March 2024) and the Form 8-K of 28 June 2024 were fetched from SEC EDGAR the same day.

Revenue shares, revenue per person screened, revenue per screen, the revenue change and the annual totals from Vendr's ranges are computed by compute.py in seo/research/stats/hireright-pricing-2026/, with every quote, URL and fetch time in the source ledger sources.json in the same folder. Search demand was checked with DataForSEO on the same date: about 50 US searches a month each for "hireright pricing" and "hireright price," 30 for "hireright background check cost" and 20 for "hireright cost."

Limitations

  • HireRight publishes no price for its main service. Every per-check figure for HireRight itself is a buyer-reported or third-party estimate.
  • The 10-K figures are for fiscal 2023. The 8-K of 28 June 2024 reports that HireRight's merger closed that day, with public shares converted into "the right to receive cash in an amount equal to $14.35 per share," so newer figures may differ.
  • Revenue per person screened is a blended average across all customers and services, not a quote for any package.
  • backgroundchecks.com shows package-level prices only inside the order flow, so only its $29.99 starting price is used.
  • "85M+ People Screened Annually" (homepage) and "approximately 26 million" people screened in 2023 (10-K) measure different things or periods; both are HireRight's own figures, repeated as such.
  • Prices are a point-in-time reading in US dollars. Check the vendor page before buying, and see our AI hiring compliance map for how screening rules vary by location.
