Nico Dontas
Red Cloud Technology
“I've been really lucky to work for some fantastic brands and come across some really great people.”
Nico Dontas has been named to the Talent 100, Class of 2026, the annual award recognizing the 100 most exceptional leaders and practitioners in talent acquisition. Honorees are selected by the Talent 100 committee from thousands of nominations and candidates across the industry, chosen for the impact of their work, the depth of their craft, and their influence on the future of recruiting. This is Nico's story.
Nico Dontas trained to put his hands on athletes, not on hiring plans. Sports and exercise science, qualification as a sports masseuse, a clear line toward physiotherapy: that was the plan, and then a detour through trading in the City of London complicated it. More than fifteen years later, he is Head of Talent at Red Cloud Technology, with a career that has run through a London recruitment agency, Facebook in Dublin and NewBank in South America, and a conviction that recruitment is worth doing precisely because you get to see what happens after the deal is signed.
From the Trading Floor to a Better Question
The trading years taught Dontas something by absence. He was good at selling, but the work ended at the signature. "You always kind of sold something, but never really got to see anything more after you'd done the deal," he says. He describes that stretch of his career bluntly as soul-destroying, and the honesty is instructive. He was not looking for an easier job. He was looking for one with a second act built into it.
The people around him supplied the answer. Dontas had grown up among engineers, friends and the parents of friends, and technology was a language he already half spoke. One of those friends, an engineer at the very start of his own career, was working with a recruitment agency and made the introduction that redirected everything. The pitch was simple and, as it turned out, exactly right: he enjoyed speaking with people, he enjoyed learning about them, he liked technology. That combination had a name.
He joined eSynergy Solutions, a recruitment agency based in London, more than fifteen years ago. He fell in love with the work almost immediately and has stayed in the profession ever since. Looking back across those years and the brands he has worked for, his own summary is characteristically generous to everyone but himself: "I've been really lucky to work for some fantastic brands and come across some really great people."
The Manager Who Made Recruiting Technical
Ask Dontas who shaped him professionally and one name arrives without hesitation: Rodrigo, his manager during his time as a principal sourcer at NewBank in South America. Rodrigo was, in his description, exceptionally smart and genuinely fluent in the technical side of the discipline, not just the relationship side. Dashboards, data, the mechanics of demonstrating value rather than simply closing a requisition. That was the standard, and it reset what Dontas expected of himself.
The lesson was that recruiting does not have to be transactional. It can be measured, argued and evidenced like any other function with a claim on the business. But the reason Rodrigo registers as one of the best managers Dontas has ever worked with is not purely technical. Dontas spent time with him in Brazil and found the same qualities in the man that he found in the work: warm, welcoming, always clear about objectives, always willing to understand a different perspective and help someone work their way through it. Clarity and generosity delivered together are rarer than either one alone.
The Hire He Fought For
The second formative figure in Dontas's career was not a manager. It was a candidate. Recruiting for Facebook in Dublin, he identified a head of DevOps platform infrastructure based in Brazil who was not, at the outset, the hiring manager's first pick. Dontas made the case anyway. It was, by his own account, one of the first times he really wanted to fight for somebody through a process, and it taught him what advocacy costs and what it can be worth.
The candidate had the trait Dontas has since learned to prize above almost any other. He had stayed current. He was still hands-on in code, still running side projects, still genuinely technical in a role that would have excused him from all of it. And he could communicate, which is ultimately what carried him over the line. Dontas moved him from Brazil to Dublin, and the story did not end at the offer. Years later, he rehired the same engineer into NewBank, bringing him from Facebook back to Brazil.
What began as a difficult senior hire became a long relationship. The two stayed in touch across continents and employers, checking in over the years, and the professional connection matured into a friendship. That arc is the direct answer to the complaint that pushed Dontas out of trading in the first place. The deal was not the end of anything. It was the start of a decade of consequence, and this time he got to watch all of it.
What He Carries Forward
As Head of Talent at Red Cloud Technology, Dontas works from a set of convictions assembled over fifteen years rather than a script. That recruiting should be evidenced, not asserted, a discipline with numbers behind it. That the people worth backing are the ones who have kept their hands in the craft and can explain it to somebody else. That a recruiter's job is not finished when a candidate signs.
It is a career built on curiosity, on wanting to learn about the person on the other side of the conversation, and on the willingness to argue for someone when the room has not yet caught up. Dontas came to the profession the way many of its best practitioners do: sideways, on a friend's recommendation, without a plan. He stayed because it gave him the thing trading never did, a job where the interesting part starts after the yes.
The Talent 100 exists to celebrate the people shaping the future of how the world hires, and few embody that better than Nico. We are honored to welcome Nico Dontas to the Talent 100, Class of 2026, and grateful for the experience, perspective, and craft they bring to this community. Congratulations, Nico. Welcome to the Talent 100.
