I founded Apache Calcite with a goal of creating a common algebra that data engines can use to talk to their data and each other. At Hortonworks I helped to build Calcite into projects such as Apache Hive and Apache Phoenix, and pushed SQL past its traditional boundaries into streaming and NoSQL applications. As part of Hortonworks' architecture team, I set direction for data products in and around Apache Hadoop. I believe that engineering is the art of the possible, and open source is a force multiplier, so I remain a hands-on developer, daily writing code and participating in the open source community in several Apache data projects.
